Mt Ol Doinyo Lengai
- Overview
Ol Doinyo Lengai is an active volcanic mountain in the Gregory Rift, south of Lake Natron, in Tanzania’s Arusha Region. It holds significant sacred meaning in the Maa language, known as the Maasai language, where it is revered as the “Mountain of God.” Part of the volcanic system of the great East African Rift Valley. Ol Doinyo Lengai is known for its unique production of Natrocarbonatite lava, a highly fluid substance that contains minimal silicon—distinguishing it from other types of lava.
Visitors who reach the summit crater are rewarded with stunning panoramic views. To the north, the salt flats of Lake Natron stretch out, often adorned with the vibrant pink hues of flamingos. The border of Kenya can be seen in the background, while to the east stands the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro. The western landscape is characterized by lush forested hills and steep escarpments that form part of the western slopes of the Great African Rift Valley. To the south lies the breathtaking Crater Highlands of Ngorongoro, renowned as Africa’s premier wildlife conservation destination.
