Mount Meru
- Overview
At 4,566 meters, Mt. Meru is Africa’s fifth-highest mountain and Tanzania’s second-highest peak. A major volcanic eruption around 250,000 years ago reshaped the eastern flank, creating its distinctive silhouette.
The climb takes you through various vegetation zones, from arid forests to dense rainforests, scrublands, and alpine terrain near the summit. Wildlife varies along the ascent, with chances to see giraffes, buffalo, baboons, colobus monkeys, and antelopes.
For safety, you must be accompanied by an armed park ranger throughout the four-day climb.
Important Note: The final ascent includes several straightforward, unguarded climbing sections. A strong tolerance for heights and sound footing is essential. The park ranger may cancel a summit attempt in adverse weather conditions such as heavy rain, icy surfaces, or dense fog. We strongly discourage attempting to climb Mount Meru during the rainy season in April and May.

Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, you will be warmly welcomed and escorted to the Meru View Lodge, located in the Usa River on the outskirts of Arusha. Dinner and overnight accommodations will be provided at the Meru View Lodge.
Altitude: ↑1000m; Walking Time: Approximately 4-5 Hours
Your transportation will pick you up at dawn and take you to the Arusha National Park gate, where your guide will handle registration. After everyone is ready, you'll start your 4-day climb of Mt. Meru from the Momella Gate.
Accompanied by an armed park ranger, you'll trek through open grasslands, with possible sightings of giraffes and buffalo. In about 2 hours, you'll reach Maio Falls, an excellent spot for a picnic.
Continuing, you'll pass the "fig tree arch" and arrive at Miriakamba Hut in time for afternoon tea and refreshments, where you'll spend the night. Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.
Altitude**: 1050 meters; **Walking Time**: Approximately 3-4 hours.
In the morning, you will ascend wooden steps along a steep path. The temperature drops with altitude, making this trek feel more straightforward than the previous day. The rainforest is often cloaked in low-hanging clouds, creating a mystical atmosphere.
After about two hours of trekking, you'll reach the scenic viewpoint "Mgongo wa Tembo" (Elephant Back) at 3200 meters for a break. The landscape shifts from rainforest to heath and moorland, leading you to Saddle Hut by midday.
In the afternoon, you can hike to Little Meru (3820 meters), which takes about 1 to 2 hours. You'll enjoy stunning views of Arusha National Park and distant Mount Kilimanjaro, around 80 kilometres away.
After returning to Saddle Hut, enjoy a hearty meal before an early night. Your wake-up call is set for just after midnight.
**Meal Plan**: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
Altitude**: ↑1010m | ↓2060m; walking time: approximately 10-14 hours.
After a light snack and tea, you'll depart the camp around 2 AM, using headlamps to navigate through bushland to Rhino Point (3821m). The trail then becomes challenging, requiring some climbing over frozen volcanic ash and rocky terrain along the crater rim. After a strenuous 4—to 5-hour ascent, you'll arrive at the summit, Socialist Peak, where you can enjoy a stunning sunrise over Mount Kilimanjaro and views of Mount Meru's crater.
The descent follows the same route back to Saddle Hut for a hot soup and tea break before continuing to Miriakamba Hut by early afternoon—fatigued yet satisfied.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
Altitude: ↓1000m; estimated walking time: approximately 2-3 hours.
After breakfast, you will begin your trek along the northern route, taking about 2 to 3 hours to return to the Momella Gate. Although the descent follows a shorter path than the ascent, you will still have the chance to encounter elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, and the distinctive black and white colobus monkeys. Once you reach the gate, you will say goodbye to your hiking crew, and your driver will take you back to Meru View Lodge. There, you can celebrate your accomplishments and spend the night.
Meals included Breakfast and Dinner.
After your morning meal, we will arrange your transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport. If you prefer to extend your trip, you can go on a safari adventure or relax on the beautiful white sands of the Indian Ocean beaches. Breakfast is included.
